Field Notes
Description:
About 4 inches in diameter, this fungus looked like an exploding chestnut! When they first pop out of the ground, they look like a fuzzy yellowish ball about the size of a baseball, and after a few days they darken to a brown, and their outside skin peels back. A pock mark is left in the soil as they decompose.
Habitat:
Pine barrens, New Jersey. Found in moist soil in between grass blades.
