Hawthorn Shield Bug
Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale
52.1908, -1.58752
Field Notes
Description:
UK's largest shield bug was attracted to the lights indoors
Habitat:
Garden with hawthorn and cotoneaster, both of which this bug eats.
Notes:
Shield bugs are also known as 'stink bugs' due to their ability to release a strong-smelling fluid when threatened. Pick up a hawthorn shield bug and its predator-repellent may stain your fingers. Its chief food is haws, the fruit of the hawthorn tree, but adults can overwinter on a diet of leaves, and individuals can be found on many potential food plants, including pedunculate oak, sessile oak and whitebeam.
