Field Notes

Description:

This is a large, broad-winged hawk lives and hunts in arid grasslands, prairies of North America

Habitat:

Grassland prairie near small lakes, ponds, and food sources.

Notes:

This ferruginous Hawk was feeding on a prairie dog when a red-tailed hawk came in to steal a few bites. The larger ferruginous hawk defended her meal, had her fill and flew off. The red-tailed hawk eventually came back to pick through the leftovers.

Thanks Liam! A friend and I went looking for snowy owls in Colorado. It was too windy and we didn't see any owls. On the way home we saw these guys! It made the day so worth it!
