Eastern Tiger Swallowtail female dark phase

Papilio glaucus

Comments (1)

Lovely find! These dark females can be tricky! A couple of ways you can tell the differences between the Black Swallowtail and the dark Eastern Tigers are: Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are larger in size. (not always easy to tell if you don't have them side by side) They have solid colored abdomens with no light dots. You can often see hints of the striping on the wings of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtails like in your photos 3 and 4. Black Swallowtails have a slightly different color pattern on the inside of the wings, usually with more yellow spots above the blue. See here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/2636
