Field Notes

Description:

More or less clump-forming, with fairly robust, branched, erect stems 20-35cm in height. Leaves 2-3cm long, triangular-ovate, cordate-based, coarsely rounded-toothed. Flowers 1.2-1.5cm long, white or cream, in branched spikes. S.a. subsp. condensata is somewhat smaller with stems branching only in the upper part, and flowers 1.6-1.9cm long. S.a. subsp. colchica may be dull mauve or cream with the lower lip purple or violet-striped.

Habitat:

Eastern Mediterranean to Transcaucasia, in open forest and macchie up to around 1700m.
