Field Notes

Description:

From across the hill it looked like a large nest of dried leaves very distinctly an ovalish formation against the green leaves of the tall tree. The depth also fits the description of an avian nest.

Habitat:

Returning back from Rocky Island near Suntaley Khola which is a remote hilly and forested area by the River Murty in the Dooars region of West Bengal, India, I made the driver stop to take a couple of shots...

Notes:

The strange thing is that ALTHOUGH the shape looks like a nest the top is also covered as if no bird ever sat on it. Is it a nest at all...and if not why should the leaves have dried out in the shape of a nest? I am curious...can any one help?
I do not think it is large enough for a mammalian sleeping nest...but hey! maybe. Help!

Thanks Ava...so it IS animal architecture...not just a jumble of dry leaves blown by wind...I'll let it stay then. Many thanks.
Or an arthropod lives under the leaves?
Maybe it's a spider web covered with leaves that have stuck to it.
