-23.7049, 133.901
Field Notes
Description:
medium sized forest kingfisher of Australia. Nests in hollow branches(shown), termite mounds or river banks, and hangs in tree branches waiting for prey
Habitat:
Telegraph station park
Notes:
We were listening to a lecture at the Telegraph station under cover from the rain, when this guy caught my eye. I started snapping pictures, and despite the poor lighting, managed a series of shots, including entering and exiting its apparent chosen nest.
The employee didn't say a word until after and wanted to know if Id seen him and that he'd just started hanging around a couple days before. He was excited for me and we chatted "twitching" for a few minutes before I headed off to do some more. The eucalypts in t he park had quite a few nice finds and the rain had mostly cleared.
My husband caught the shot of him coming out of the hole - almost by accident - as he thought the branch formation was interesting in of itself. It was a happy accident, indeed.
