Description:

The pen shell (Pinna nobilis) is a species of bivalve mollusc of the family Pinnidae endemic of the Mediterranean Sea. She can reach one meter in length and live up to 20 years. Its inclusion in the seabed is vertical, usually inhabit seagrass meadows.
Is a species currently threatened by fishing, pollution, loss of seagrass meadows and damage caused by dragging anchors.<br> <br>
La nacra (Pinna nobilis) es una especie de molusco bivalvo de la familia Pinnidae endémico del mar Mediterráneo. Puede alcanzar un metro de longitud y vivir hasta los 20 años. Su inserción en el lecho marino es vertical, suele habitar en los prados de posidonia y suele tener un color oscuro.
Posee un penacho piloso denominado biso con el cual se pueden confeccionar tejidos similares a la seda ("seda de mar").
Especie amenazada en la actualidad, anteriormente existía una gran cantidad de estos individuos, ahora amenazados por la pesca, la contaminación, la desaparición de las praderas de posidonia y los daños producidos por el arrastre de anclas.

Habitat:

Playa arenosa y con praderas de posidonia. La Azohía (Murcia).

Your spottings are always a treat Eulalia ! Thanks for sharing them. This one grows to a metre you say. It must feel good to come across a large specimen. I wait for the day when I can read about exciting creatures with a statement saying that they are flourishing instead of being endangered. It's the same story everywhere, isn't it? Yet no one dares to say a word about exploding populations of humans !!
