Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Crocea Clam, Crocus Clam, Boring Clam, Boring Giant Clam, Burrowing Clam, Dwarf Giant Clam and Saffron-colored Clam. This is the smallest species of giant clam. They grow to a length of about 10cm. They feed on plankton.

Habitat:

Found in small cracks and fissures on shallow reef flats, in the Indo-Pacific region. Depth: 2 to 20m.

Notes:

Spotted this cute clam at a depth of about 5m. It was ensconced in a big stony coral and was spouting happily when I approached it. The last photo shows it clamped shut -- because I'd approached too closely. It measured about 6cm across.
