In southwestern Wisconsin, lead miners of the 1800s reportedly searched for this plant believing that its presence indicated lead ore in the ground beneath their long roots--hence its name. Stories abound how plants (and animals) have gotten their names; it's a part of their mystique and makes for great folklore....grin.
