Field Notes

Description:

Large bird with long tail feathers that have "eyes"on them. Neck feathers are a brilliant "peacock blue" colour in males. Crest present. Legs bare of feathers. Harsh call.

Habitat:

This one was spotted in Ross Island.

Notes:

Not clear how it got here...did the British introduce it? It is a clumsy flier. Too far to fly from the Indian mainland. It does not even fly to Port Blair (20 mins or so by boat) What is clear is that it has gone wild now, and doing well on the island. National bird of India.
