Field Notes

Description:

Dark brown body with blotches all over. The dorsal and anal fins have pale edges (hence the name). Both eyes are on the right-hand side.

They feed on bottom-dwelling small fish and invertebrates. They grow to a length of about 50cm.

Habitat:

Found singly and nocturnally, on sandy areas of lagoons and seaward reefs. During the day they are buried in the sand. Found at depths of 4 to 50m. Widespread in the Indo-Asia Pacific region.

Notes:

I had apparently (and accidentally) disturbed this flatfish, because it became agitated and stirred up the sand. Spotted it during an afternoon dive in about 7m of water. I estimate it to be 30cm long. Too bad, though, I wasn't able to get a clear shot of its eyes.

Thanks guys! It was fun doing hide-and-seek with him... although I'm sure it wasn't fun for him. :")
That video is so cool. First, I was impressed how fast it moved, then about how it sought refuge near the plant with the same colors and then by its disappearing act. Great capture, Blogie!
