Field Notes

Description:

Found late in the evening emerging from a tree hallow. Small specimen, no longer than one foot or so. I believe it is a yellow rat snake, but not sure.

Habitat:

wetland

Notes:

A lucky spotting, my eyes just happened to lock on it late in the evening while walking on the boardwalk at 6 Mile Cypress Slough Nature Preserve in Ft Myers Florida.

Just a note from a snake geek: The new common name (most recently changed) is now "Eastern Rat Snake." (Although I generally id by both). I believe the currently accepted scientific name is a bit different too: Pantherophis alleghaniensis (although these names are changed quite frequently, and different experts tend to argue over them fairly frequently too!) http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/herpetology/fl-guide/Pantherophisalleghaniensis.htm
Very nice! Prettier than the gray rat snakes we have round here!
