This impressive series is getting due recognition with a Spotting of the Day! Congratulations Albert. "A female Giant Dead Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys desiccata) shows an impressive defensive posture in our Spotting of the Day! A well known dry leaf mimic that can freeze and drop to the ground when threatened, this mantis can also react to potential predators with a deimatic display (from the Greek δειματόω (deimatόo), meaning "to frighten"). For this species deimatic behavior consists of a colorful wing display with large eye spots and black and white stripes. This mantis also raises its forelegs to show a red area with bright black and white stripes. As has been described for other species, the deimatic display seen here could also be a signal of rebuff between two potential mates. Project Noah member Albert Kang saw both a female and a male Giant Dead Leaf Mantis in defensive posture in this spotting. When the female got near to the male, the male displayed right away and they didn't court or mate. Make sure to check the spotting for pictures of the male and of the pair together".
