Field Notes

Description:

Seeds of the black cottonwood, a model organism. This is a host for the cottonwood leaf beetle, Chrysomela scripta, which I’ve also recently spotted.

Habitat:

Spotted in a forest clearing just footsteps from Kenai Lake, Alaska. Altitude of ~3000'.

Notes:

Introduced to Alaska in the 1940s. Also known as western balsam-poplar or California poplar.

I agree as well. Thank you both for confirming! It’s interesting that I found the beetles at a location different from that of the cottonwood seeds.

I agree with you Machi. The leaves in the picture are cottonwood and the spotting time would be correct.
