Field Notes

Description:

Small duck, smaller than a FL mottled duck, that looks like a mixed breed between a mallard and something else. I believe it is a male as it has a curled "drake" feather on its tail. What could it be a mixture of? Liam suggests a Swedish and Call duck combo, a full grown male.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL

Notes:

This was a scrappy little duck who appears to be young and not full grown. He got amidst the other bigger mottled ducks and Muscovies to eat and showed little fear of humans, coming within a few inches of me to eat..

Species ID Suggestions

Domestic Mallard

Anas platyrhynchos

Comments (2)

It is a pure Mallard, but it has a number of different breeds in it, including Swedish and Call. Call Ducks are a "miniature" version of standard breeds and typically have shorter heads and bills and more rounded bodies. I would call this an adult drake.
