Field Notes

Description:

A large black very long necked water bird with a red beak and some white showing under opened wings.

Habitat:

Near the shore of a very large salt water bay where a rocky reef has been allocated to wildlife conservation. Although having lived near here since childhood I haven't before seen either black swans or the sea grass beds they were feeding in. This is fully salt water too which also seems unusual for black swans.

Notes:

I was surprised to find these here and also to find this bird was a native to NZ. It disappeared there and need to be reintroduced from Australia. Apparently there are populations in the US now as well as the UK and Europe. Hope they're getting their frequent flyer points.
