I've moved this snail from the Arthropod category tot he Other category for you. Arthropods have exoskeletons and articulated joints; think flies, crabs, dragonflies.
Hi ToddBell, As achmmad has pointed out this is turning out to be a super pest. Could you please add this spotting to 'The Giant African Snail Hunt',http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/14260136
It is a mission which I started to study the invasion extent of the African Snail.
Great discussion. Saw these snails after a 6 days hike through the jungle back to Bukit lawang. One of my best trips. I'll find a photo of one on my beer to give a size perspective.
Achmmad, a natural way to protect your plants is by sprinkling crushed egg shells around the plant. The egg shells contain magnesium and calcium and that will not hurt the plant . You will get a healthy crop. the snails however will not venture near the crop because they do not like walking on rough surfaces .
Alice: They are introduced from East Africa, considered invasive in my country. Yes, its big, like the name. The biggest one I've ever found seems 13-15 cm shell, about 20 cm (may be) when walking. @Emma: I've never see them eat other snail, just crops or other species of plants. Btw, any strategies to control their population outside their native range?
these are voracious.eaters. I am trying to get an estimate of how much bigger they are than the average snail.Seem to be five times larger.
Do they eat other snails?
