Fir Tussock Moth

Orgyia detrita

White-marked tussock moth

Orgyia leucostigma

After a wrong ID of Leucostigma I am a little bit careful with these ones. Detrita is the most common tussock moth in Florida and compared with Leucostigma with these "yellowish" warts which are missing in Leucostigma. But I am not 100% sure... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/9100506 http://bugguide.net/node/view/501065/bgimage http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=8313 Interesting is the fact that female Orgyia can't fly, looks like a cocoon, stays next to the empty cocoon and dies after having laid its eggs. The males itsleves are extremely nervous flyers looking for resting females and will be attracked by pheromones.
