Woodpecker nest?

A conspicuous hole in a tree, possibly a woodpecker nest. Other than spotting birds going to/coming from the hole, are there tell-tale signs that distinguish the larger hole as a bird nest? For what it's worth, I have spotted Red-Bellied Woodpeckers feeding near the location of this tree.
