Field Notes

Description:

Although there are marked anatomical differences between species, their common (better saying, their popular) names in Portuguese (gafanhotos for locusts and grilos for crickets) refer mostly to their size (if it is large, it is a gafanhoto, a grilo if it is small).

Notes:

From one angle it looks like a wasp, from other one, it looks like a grasshopper... Unfortunately, pic #3 isn't very good.

Tettigoniidae, Phaneropterinae, and most probably either Aganacris sp. or Scaphura sp., there might be conflicting IDs and I am not suer which ID on the pictures is really true. You might ask an expert for these ones. Aganacris pseudosphex or Aganacris nitida as a synonym is very close to yours: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bigal_river_conservation_project_ecuador/4717593113/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/mario_martins/4444192859/ But it is also mentioned that it might be a Scaphura sp., both genus are obviously very similar: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mario_martins/5477359289/ http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=77278392@N00&q=Scaphura%20nigra http://www.flickr.com/photos/acbc/3751592089/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/acbc/6106103722/ http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1136826 http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1136803
I'm sure it is in the Order Orthoptera and not a wasp. And it looks like something in the Infraorder Tettigoniidea - Katydids, Camel Crickets, and relatives. But I don't know which one.
