Field Notes
Description:
Small plant that blooms very early in the Spring. It is a very showy purple flower that blooms from a short (about 1-2 inch) stem with a flower that can be a 1/2 inch or more.
Habitat:
Flower beds in many climates. These particular ones are planted in light sun with morning exposure. They are planted in rich dark soil away from the wind.
Notes:
These were also not planted by us but came up once we pulled up an evergreen that was apparently keeping them from blooming for years. Once we pulled up the evergreen these and snowdrops appeared every spring thereafter.
They are a sure sign that spring is coming and will even bloom while there is still snow on the ground. Once I photographed, we covered them back up as Michigan is now getting some very cold very rainy and even possibly snowy day.
I will upload more photos as they bloom.
You can see in Photos #2 and #3 that they are planted near snowdrops (on the left).
