Description:

This beautiful moss is natural to Michigan. It starts to grow very early in the season (this is what it looked like on March 2) and will grow virtually anywhere.

Habitat:

Growing in highly shaded areas with rich dark soil with good drainage. The habitat is very moist and very little else will grow in these areas including grass.

Notes:

We have transplanted it from back in the undeveloped wooded area to our yard in areas where grass won't grow due to a lack of sun or a high traffic zone for the dogs. This grows beautifully there.

She also made dandelion wine...although I have to say I don't really like that so much.

Well said! I try the best to keep my yard natural (outside of my flower beds) and keep the pesticides, chemicals and other unnatural substances off my yard both for nature and for my dogs. And, yes, cooking with weeds...my mom used to make pan-fried dandelions.

But really,might be a good idea. Now a days people have been taking classes on " Cooking with weeds" We have really forgotten to make use of what is so naturally available.

My husband does strange things like that. He transplants grass in small plantings as we expand the flower garden. We have a few spots in the back yard that are either too shady or too wet to grow grass well especially when the dogs pace the fence lines. This stuff grows great. It is soft and fills in like a carpet. And it is natural to our area since he found it in the back woods. So, I like that too. We try as much as possible to contain any species not natural to our flower beds only.

Apple, That is an interesting concept. Moss instead of Lawn!!The sun shines so strongly in our backyard,that we finally removed the lawn. We had some tile work done in one half . The other half has nothing yet. it has a lot of moss growing. Maybe we should cover it evenly with moss? I think this is more of a landscaping question! I have never heard of moss being used before!
