Field Notes

Description:

Pink "helicopter" type seedpods. Species?

Habitat:

"Hammock" area of cypress slough

Notes:

Helicopters bring back fond childhood mermories, hours of outdoor play. This may possibly be the seedpod of the American Elm, not sure. Got that lead from reading the brochure about 6 Mile Cypress Slough Preserve.

I've added a couple leaf pics, hope that helps with identification :)
You are somewhere in the Maple genus. Do you have a picture of the leaves?
Here's another great website..it has a whole section on helicopters and gives a complete list of the plants that use them... http://waynesword.palomar.edu/plfeb99.htm#helicopters
Take a look at this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_rubrum Could this be it?
Looks like a type of maple to me...is that possible? Maybe red maple?
Here's a great website that explains why the "helicopter" is so effective in nature... http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/content/news-archive/news/1735/
