Field Notes

Description:

Large tree "growing from 12 m (39 ft) - 35 m (115 ft) in height with a wide crown, with a trunk up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in diameter" with very course, gray bark and large buds with dangling bracts of yellow and pink inflorescence and white flowers. The leaves on the fourth photo (taken 3/14/12) have coarse crenate teeth and are heart shaped. This one was about 20 meters tall.

Habitat:

Kit Carson Park in parking lot area. This tree is native to California and is a "poplar native to riparian zones of the Southwestern United States and far northern Mexico. The tree grows near streams, rivers, springs, wetlands, and well-watered alluvial bottomlands at elevations below 2,000 m (6,600 ft) elevation" - Wikipedia

Thank you hof.balm for the genus. I returned and added a photo of the leaves confirming your suggestion. It appears to be a common species we have here on the west coast of the US.
