Field Notes

Description:

Redshanks are small wades, about 25 cm in length. In summer, they are brown above and whitish and striped below, easily recognized among other waders thanks to their characteristic orange legs and base of bills.

Habitat:

Like most waders, they are found in wetlands, in particular low-laying inland and coastal marshes. Here, we observed dozen of these beauties in saline marshes of Sené, a highly protected ornithological reserve in Morbihan bay of Brittany, France.

Notes:

The marshes of Sené are waders' paradise, and I wish we had some more time to explore them more. In one afternoon we observed plenty of avocets, stilts, barges, dunlins, shelducks, egrets, lapwings, terns and gulls; unfortunately, we missed spoonbills, but got some kingfisher, swallows, wrens in exchange... Great place, great volunteers ready to explain and answer your questions; and I sincerely recommend it if you are around.
