Description:
Very tall (4-5ft tall) stork with white plumage and a bare black head, neck and beak. At the base of the neck is a bare red band above where the feathers end. Both sexes are similar with the males growing larger.
Habitat:
Flat horse pasture that floods during heavy rains.
Notes:
These large storks are the tallest flying birds in the Americas with large males reaching 5ft tall. There are reportedly less than 20 breeding pairs in Costa Rica.
