Field Notes

Description:

A Red-tailed Hawk spotted along the Mount Vernon Trail, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Fairfax County, Virginia USA. I used "burst mode" to shoot a series of photos showing the hawk eating a small rodent it stalked and captured. The hawk used its talons to pin the rodent to a tree branch and used its beak to eviscerate the animal. This is the same specimen featured in another of my PN spottings: Red-tailed Hawk http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8910229

Habitat:

Forested area alongside the Potomac River, maintained by the U.S. National Park Service. Related Resource: http://www.nps.gov/gwmp/index.htm
