Field Notes

Description:

Common name is "snake bird" because of the way the neck looks while it swims. Its dark feathers are not waterproof, so they need to bake on the sun to dry their wings.

Habitat:

Lake Eola. Downtown Orlando.

Notes:

This particular snake bird was fighting over some bread crumbs with a great egret. Living in Lake Eola, a small lake in Dowtown Orlando. The water seemed clear, free of debris.
