I bet it wanted to be *in* the stream. Maybe it was underwater when it chose the spot. I'm still betting cranefly.
No I wasn't in a vernal pool I found it under some leafs next to a small stream
Leaf litter? Any chance you were in a vernal pool? These are typically aquatic.
