Field Notes

Description:

Little sapling of a tree - very early spring.
Horse chestnut is deciduous.
The leaves are opposite and palmately compound, with 5–7 leaflets
Fruits are called conkers - and kids in England stick string through them and play a game.

Note - The American Chestnut trees are in the beech family along with beech and oak, and are not closely related to the horse-chestnut, which is in the family Sapindaceae.

The horse chestnut is not a native tree in America.
