Description:
Checkered black & white pattern and broad white stripe down the center of the back. Small chisel-like bill, blocky head and wide shoulders. Often confused with the Hairy Woodpecker which has a longer bill.
Habitat:
Open woodlands and brushy or weedy edges. Also found in orchards, city parks, backyards and vacant lots.
