Field Notes

Description:

About 35mm long; impressive digging 'claws'; oversized abdomen.

Habitat:

Found under a clay pot in a suburban back yard.

Notes:

Regarding cicada options this one was located at least 30 metres from any living trees... well in the open.

What do those claws look like after final moult? Size might help for an ID?
Cicadinae or Tibicininae ??

Mark, the claws enable them to latch onto the tree bark for the long process of mouling into the imago (adult) form. The Adult legs will not have them.
Thanks lori. That would explain the differences then.

It's a cicada nymph, Mark. Just not sure which one.
Good suggestion Jemma. I still have problems with lack of cerci, different 'cephalothorax', claw shapes... but obviously seems related. Nymphal form makes it a little trickier... but I like it - thanks.
Seen anything like it? Those claws have me puzzled.
