Field Notes

Description:

Clump of grass with typical flower spikes at the free end.

Habitat:

What makes this clump of grass extraordinary is its habitat. Baratan Island has India's only mud volcano. The actual vent is very small with occasional bubble...non-scientific tourists get mightily bored. But around this vent is an area filled with slushy mud. This area is cordoned off. The grass was growing inside the cordoned area.

Notes:

A notice outside the cordon said that the stuff thrown out by the volcano is not good for plants which tend to die in soil rich in the minerals thrown out by the mud volcano....however, this clump of grass was growing merrily in the sludge...lots of bagworm cases on the bamboo fencing around the mud volcano. I never thought a geothermally active, unstable and hostile soil could support grass. (Extremophilic organisms, yes but not grass...well, I stand corrected.)

Thanks Ava T-B, I am just surprised anything grows under such hostile conditions.
Lovely picture and notes.
