Field Notes

Description:

Medium size butterfly with a wingspan of 30-38 mm. Anverse of the forewing of the male is orange-yellow with a dark band on the margin. The hindwing is dark brown. The reverse of the hindwing presents a broad irregular white band delimited by several ocela. The ocela consist of a white pupil, surrounded by a black ring, an orange one and finally delimited by a black thin line. The ocela S2, S3 and S4 are aligned and S1 is residual or absent. Usually a silver band delimits the wing margin, but not always.

Alpine meadow. Parque Nacional de Sierra de Guadarrama
