Description:

Male bison, at least five feet tall at the shoulder.

Habitat:

North American high plains grasslands.

Notes:

The uploaded image is of one of several individual bison observed on either side of--and sometimes crossing--U.S. Highway 385 just south of its southern junction with the access road to the Wind Cave National Park Visitor Center in South Dakota.

I e-mailed this picture to my daughter, who showed it to her 2-year old daughter, who announced, "That's a yak". Obviously it's not, but my granddaughter had seen a picture of a yak, never of a bison, and made an association.
