Field Notes

Description:

Pieridae; Coliadinae; Eurema laeta semperi Moore, 1906. I am not 100% sure that this is E. l. semperi, the Spotless Grass Yellow because the only view I could get was slightly obscured by the grasses. However, I am reasonably certain from what can be seen. It is definitely a Wet Season Form. The first picture is a cropped photo to show the specimen as best I can. The second one is the same photo, much less cropped to show the habitat. The reason that I was so keen to take a picture of this butterfly, even when I could not get a good, clear view was, of course, that it looks like it is starting to oviposit.

Habitat:

This butterfly was spotted in a rice field which was left uncultivated this season to allow the land to rest. When we do this, an amazing variety of grasses and foliage springs up very quickly and creates what I like to call a tropical meadow.

Notes:

The scientific document in the following site, gives additional confirmation of this ssp. in Philippines - https://lkcnhm.nus.edu.sg/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/app/uploads/2017/…
