Field Notes

Description:

A large flightless bird with black plumage, a blue face and neck, red on the nape and two red wattles hanging down around its throat.Its most prominent feature is its horn-like brown casque which sits atop the head.Sexually monomorphic, but the female is dominant and larger with a longer casque, larger bill and brighter-colored bare parts.

Habitat:

In its natural habitat the southern cassowary is distributed in tropical rainforests of Indonesia, New Guinea and northeastern Australia.
This specimen lives in Pairi Daiza, Belgium.

Hahaha!!! Sukanya, not really :-) My camera is Olympus SP-820UZ 40x wide optical zoom, 80X SR zoom. I guess it helps that the animal is in a zoo and therefore not running away at first sight of people :-D
