Description:
A striking orange and black butterfly on the upper surface. The underside of the wings have bright silver spots, hence the common name. It is also called the Pasionaria Mexicana in Spanish, since a preferred larval food source is the Passion Flower. Body length about 2 cm. This species is a native of Mexico but occasionally strays into the US and south to Panama. Family Nymphalidae (Heliconinae) or Heliconidae.
Habitat:
Found on the ground at night outside our gate, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
