Field Notes
Description:
Its body shape is cylindrical in cross-section, is ideally suited. The body is dark but iridescent, with indistinct pale bands, and the blunt tail has reddish colouration which it displays when threatened. The head is short and blunt, and of similar shape to the body. The eyes are small.
Adults can grow to 1 m in length.
Dorsal scales smooth, in 19 or 21 rows. Ventrals 186-245, not quite twice as large as the contiguous dorsal scales; anal plate divided; subcaudals 5-10
It feeds mainly on other snakes and eels, and is a good swimmer.
Habitat:
The Red-tailed Pipe Snake is found in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indochina and southern China(Fujian, Hong Kong and on Hainan Island) to Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi.
Notes:
I found it in Soi 24 of Sammakorn Village. It's dead I'm sure. At that time, I saw it but when I passed it, it didn't react me, so I walked closer and saw its stomach was spilled, then I took a photo of it. I didn't kill it I sware...
An interesting thing about this snake is its red tiny tail(as can see in the second picture), I think that thing makes its name became 'Red-tailed' pipe snake.
