Great Horned Owls
Bubo virginianus
39.9003, -105.081
Field Notes
Description:
Large nocturnal owl with ear tufts and wide wing span.
Habitat:
Found from the Arctic tundra to the tropical rainforest, from the desert to suburban backyards, the Great Horned Owl is one of the most widespread and common owls in North America.
Notes:
It's nice to see that the two owls that live near my house are still around. They are no longer trying to nest, but at least they are still around and hunting! The larger female is more confident than her mate and doesn't spook as easily. She also very elusive and hides herself very well in the large cottonwoods. The smaller male is more nervous and will quickly fly away if you stop and watch for too long.
