Description:
It is a medium sized butterfly in the family, (Nymphalidae) The Brush footed butterflies. It has brown on the underside with variable eye spots. This specimen does not seem to have them. The top side of the wings are orange and brown with black eye spots and lines.
Habitat:
Little Elm park, Texas.
Notes:
It is native to North America, especially the eastern half from Canada to northern Mexico. This specimen was an old female that was sitting on a large Hackberry tree, (Celtis). The caterpillars feed on Hackberry trees and have some gregarious behaviors, clustering together as a small army. This species has multiple generations a year in Texas.
