Isabella Tiger Moth
Pyrrharctia isabella
44.6409, -85.5801
Field Notes
Description:
This moth was rather large and extremely furry. It caught my eye while it was crossing the road and the orange (although the picture doesn't really do it justice) was brilliant and bold.
Habitat:
I found it on the road next to the old golf course, so I assume that it lives there. There is tall grass and a heavy understory and herb layer and is filled with rotting logs.
Notes:
It was crossing the road when I saw it and it was moving faster than most caterpillars I have seen. I picked up a leaf and it crawled up on to it and I escorted it to the other side so it wouldn't be run over.
