Field Notes

Description:

White flower in red calyxes that look somewhat like pockets. Leaves are large and flat.

Habitat:

Growing wild by the roadside in many places of Andaman. This one was spotted on Baratang island but I ha ve seen it in the protected Jarawa reserves (no photography allowed), Port Blair too.

You are right Bayucca...it is in one of the many islands that make up the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar islands...the sea is actually just a 5 minute ride away. Thanks for the ID.
Costaceae, most probably a Cheilocostus sp. or as a synonym Costus sp. There are several species around with Cheilocostus speciosus as being the most common one. Please, check your location it is somewhere in the middle of the Andmanan Sea.
