Field Notes

Notes:

I found it interesting that the ants were cleaning out the inside of this bird egg-
The only thing I know about these ants is that they have a terrible bite to them which is very painful. Also, they build in the yard without a permit!! :)

Ashish, thank you for making this one of your favorites!!
Thank you jocopj for your awesome feedback!! Since being bit so many times on my feet, I have reserved my walking barefoot to inside the house!! They are vicious creatures to say the least! So tiny and yet so powerful!! Thank you once again for your input, I enjoyed reading your post!!
Hey Melissa... yep, they both bite to hold onto the skin and then they arch their back up to sting you repeatedly. Many people don't realize they are standing on a colony until they have a hundred... or several hundred ants on them when one and in simple terms "like the captain of a firing squad will order the attack as all of the ants bite and begin stinging simultaneously. Some people are highly allergic to the stings and go into shock or even die from them. Newborn animals and baby birds just hatched, whether in nests on the ground or in a tree, also fall prey to these vicious insects. They'll eat almost anything. Excellent photo by the way. Thanks for sharing.
