Zebra Dove
Geopelia striata
21.2749, -157.825
Field Notes
Description:
The males and females look the same (it’s the males that are always “bowing” to the females who seem to patently ignore them). They are the smaller of the doves seen around Hawaii and are gray to brownish gray. They have long tails, blue around their eyes and beak, and black and white bars on their necks, shoulders and breasts. Their bellies are usually light gray with maybe a slight pinkish cast.
Habitat:
Waikiki, Hawaii.
Notes:
They are often seen in small to large groups on the ground picking up crumbs in public areas and eating seeds of grass and other plants in yards, parks and pretty much everywhere else. Away from people they feed in pairs or alone by picking up seeds in bare areas of the ground. They also eat small insects but seeds are their main food.
They are native from Malaya to Australia and were introduced to Oahu in 1922
