Field Notes

Description:

This was one of my favorite finds of the summer! This gorgeous long, black snake graced me with his/her presence on one of my hikes. The Northern subspecies of the Black Racer (Coluber constrictor) is the longest snake found in New York state (commonly found at lengths of 36-67 inches). This snake appeared to be fully grown. Solid black coloration with white under the chin and a dark gray belly.

Habitat:

Temperate forest.
