Field Notes

Description:

Even glossy black with red-and-yellow shoulder badges.

Habitat:

Look for Red-winged Blackbirds in fresh and saltwater marshes, along watercourses, water hazards on golf courses, and wet roadsides, as well as drier meadows and old fields. In winter, you can find them at crop fields, feedlots, and pastures.

I am planning to go out to High lsland for the first time soon, I hope to see more and bring you more bird postings. I just got me a 500mm but without tripod it is hard to shoot steady but with is cumbersome to travel...we'll see...

Susan....I wish I had a camera that would zoom but I honestly just loved being able to see them...I have never seen a female. I too am hoping that you or Karen will be able to get some great photo's!!

These guys are back here too - we have cattails growing in the culvert at the end of our land & the females nest in the grasses there. We have had 2 males holding a shouting match on the telephone wires above for the past week - I guess each is laying claim to prime real estate!

I was in Anahuac TX a couple of weeks ago and there were plenty there except they were so quick as I get close they took off. I still do not have a good enough zoom plus it is cumbersome to try to shoot in a vast marshland, I was exhausted at the end of the day!

Thanks, Susan. I don't have very good zoom on my camera. My boyfriend is from Texas and told me childhood stories of these birds-so when I saw this one, I was a happy camper as I had never seen one before!!
