Field Notes

Notes:

Until yesterday a Coucal, Crow Pheasant, was building it's nest in a mass of bougainvillea covering a neem tree outside my kitchen window. This morning when I looked, a swarm of bees had started building their hive a few inches away. I guess the Coucal will have to start making another nest. Pity, as it was all but finished! But maybe they can live together. It will be interesting to see.
You can see the outline of the nest in image 3.

any idea what kind of bees they are? They are quite small, much smaller than the usual bees we had in Melb, Australia, when I was growing up.
Liam, interesting. I thought that it's a big tree with many places a hive could be built, seemed strange that they should build it so close to the nest. They are not actually in the nest though...
Bees sometimes take over bird's nest, killing their young.
Sounds like the Coucal has the 'neighbors from hell' moving in next door! It will be interesting to see what happens next!
