Field Notes

Description:

The Great Blue Heron is a large wading bird found near lakes shores and open water.

Habitat:

Large cottonwood tree surrounded by a pond on a golf course.

Notes:

This male was one of three Great Blue Herons I spotted yesterday. The other two heron completely ignored him while they nuzzled each other. Oh lovebirds! This guy tried his best to get noticed by putting on quite the mating display, but the other two just ignored him, even when he went as far as landing on their nest! As I got closer this male took a break from his display to check me out. He left his perch and did 2 "fly-bys". He came within 5 feet of my head both times. Once he decided I wasn't a threat, he went back to his display. I was impressed at how confident he was! He wasn't afraid to get close! I was also impressed with his size, I swear he looks like a pterodactyl in some of these pictures. A true modern day dinosaur!
